German Shepards are often used as working dogs, they are courageous, keen, alert and fearless. Cheerful, obedient and eager to learn. Tranquil, confident, serious and clever. German Shepherds are extremely faithful, and brave. They will not think twice about giving their lives for their human pack. They have a high learning ability. German Shepherds love to be close to their families, but can be wary of strangers. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when they feel it is necessary. Often used as police dogs, the German Shepherd has a very strong protective instinct, and are extremely loyal to their handler. Socialized this breed well starting at puppyhood. Aggression and attacks on people are due to poor handling and training. Problems arise when an owner allows the dog to believe he is pack leader over humans and or does not give the dog the mental and physical daily exercise they need to be stable. This breed needs owne…
Thundershirt Like the squeeze chute for cattle, and the
squeeze machine for people with autism (invented by Temple Grandin), everyone
feels better with a hug. Gentle pressure has a calming effect on the nervous
system, which is why using pressure to relieve anxiety has been a common
practice for years. Thundershirt is an excellent treatment for
most types of dog anxiety and fear issues. Once you introduce your dog to the
Thundershirt, all you have to do is put it on your dog and observe the results
(no training needed). You may see significant improvement for noise and crate
anxiety, travel, barking and other problems quickly and easily. This is also a
wonderful tool for managing excitability or hyperactivity with strangers, on
the leash, or in a training environment. Thundershirt is my first recommendation to
help anxious dogs, and I have had many clients whose dog will chill out while
wearing their Thundershirt. This is not the same as doggy clothes. Try the
Thundershirt. The key is in…
Saturday I attended theSeaside Scottish Games at the Ventura Fairgrounds. Had a wonderful time. While I was there I viewed a demonstration by herding dogs. The breeds represented were Border Collie, Corgi, an Australian Shepherd mix and German Shepherd, as I can recall. These dogs are amazing. The Border Collies genetically have this ability and the training enhances the work. Those dogs can put those sheep wherever the handler directs them.
The emphasis in the demonstration was on the Border Collies. The Border Collie is very intelligent and aware of it’s surroundings. They are able to be trained to a high degree. They are one of the hardest working dogs and thrive on praise.
Sheep are prey and the dogs are predators. That is how they control the sheep so well. Because of this dynamic, a herding dog should not be left alone with smaller non-canine pets. If bored, they may also try to herd children.
These dogs are too intelligent to lie around the house all day with nothing to do. If …
